I have been rooting for and anticipated Dust since I first heard about it, I am now beginning to have some doubts if this really will work out well. Not in a "omg eve is dieing" sorta way, but rather a healthy skepticism. Partially due to the crowd's reaction on that conference (Or lack thereof, rather) and that there are a lot of factors which needs to go well together for this game to work.
One thing I don't understand is how this will work in the relatively massive EVE universe. If you play for example Modern Warfare 2 on PC still, you see that even that number of playlists divide the players too much, so that most of them are pretty empty, simply because there aren't enough players. Same goes for Black Ops to an extent. What I'm getting at is that CoD is by many regarded as the FPS and Dust is just this back-alley kid.
While PS3 offers a potentially larger crowd, EVE is just that much bigger than the playlists of CoD, so where will one go to find combat? Unless I've completely misunderstood this, the combatants will be spread out not only through the systems of New Eden, but over all the planets. Keeping this in mind, I'm imagining Captain's Quarters with guns and armor - a completely empty space you walk around alone.
Another thing is the total number of players. What kind of userbase has CCP imagined with dust? I mean, this was never going to be another CoD (with regards to number of active players), but now limiting it to one platform... It doesn't add up well for me. If it was XBOX, PS3 and PC (I know PC never was on the table, tho), then maybe the potential number of players would start to stand up against EVE's size. I just don't see Dust gaining the number of active players to sustain itself.
It looks ****ing awesome for me, but another issue here is that Dust isn't necessarily something that'll appeal to the mainstream FPS players.
But what the hell do I know, I am probably too tired atm to even make sense.  Too bad I won't be playing it regardless - I hate that controller so god damn much when it comes to FPS'. I can hold my own and then some when playing on the computer, but with XBOX or PS3 controllers I am less than useless. lol
